Kwabena Donkor, Energy Minister |
The
office of The Insight has been inundated with complaints by consumers of electricity
from all over Ghana.
The Complaint range from the non-registration
of credits bought for prepaid meters to overcharging.
Mr
Sly Weelbeck, a tailor at Kokomlemle in
Accra told the “The Insight “ that he bought GHC50.00 (fifty Ghana cedis) for his
meter and when he inserted it, the reading was zero.
According
to him, he went and complained to ECG and was told that those who fixed his meter
did not connect an earth wire to it.
After
connecting an earth wire, he bought more credit but that also did not register.
Mr
Osoko from Musuku at New Ashongman complains that he bought credits of
GHC100.00 ( one hundred Ghana cedis) for his prepaid meter but after insertion
it only registered GHC 45.00.
Madam Yaa Mansa claims that a year ago, she
was paying only about GHC 300 (Three hundred cedis) for electricity.
When her post paid meter was changed to
a pre paid meter her bill jumped to GHC 1,200.00 ) one thousand and two hundred
Ghana Cedis) within the twinkle of an eye.
Now she claims to be paying GHC 2,500.00 (two
thousand five hundred Ghana cedis) a month.
When
Madam Yaa Mansa went to the Electricity Company of Ghana to complain, workers
there broke into uncontrollable laughter.
They
called the new prepaid meter “Usain Bolt” implying that the costs of
electricity paid by users of that metre
was unreasonable.
Mr
Joseph Mainoo of Spintex Road says that he also uses the “ Usain Bolt” meter
and that even when all appliances in his house are switched off the meter keeps
running.
Similar complaints have come from Tamale,
Kumasi, Takoradi and Tema.
