The
one week celebration of the death of Mrs Mary Adu Boahen, will be held on
Monday, October 24, 2016 at the Accra Ridge Church at 7am prompt followed by a
gathering at the Airport Residence of her late husband.
Auntie
Mary as she was popularly known was the wife of Professor Albert Adu Boahen,
the 1992 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
She
was a seasoned political activist in her own right having been a close
confidant of Ghana’s first President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Auntie
Mary is reputed to have been one of the main couriers of the Osagyefo carrying
messages between Guinea, Sierra Leone and Ghana.
She
was at one stage declared a wanted person by the National Liberation Council
(NLC). Mrs Adu Boahen was also a founding member of the People’s Movement for
Freedom and Justice Jointly led by General Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa and Kombla
Agbeli Gbedemah.
She
was arrested and detained by the Acheampong Government as a result of her
political activities.
Mrs
Adu Boahen also played a key role in the Movement for Freedom and Justice
Chaired by her husband.
She
left behind sons and daughters including Mrs Irene Tagoe.

A GALLANT WOMAN
Mrs.
Mary Adu Boahen, was undoubtedly a very gallant woman who was ready to do
anything and everything to liberate her country from the dirty clutches of
imperialism.
She
was an ardent member of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) who gained the full
confidence of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
At
one point she was at the very centre of the effort to return Nkrumah to power
and her activities got noticed by the National Liberation Council (NLC) which
declared her wanted.
She
was an activist in her own right and in 1979, Auntie Mary became a founding
member of the Peoples Movement for Freedom and Justice (PMFJ), then led by
General Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa and the veteran Nationalist leader, Komla Agleh
Gbedemah.
In
the early 1990, Mrs Adu Boahen played a leading role, in the agitation for the restoration of
multi-party rule in Ghana.
She
was arrested and detained on a number of occasions for her political activism.
The
Insight salutes Madam Adu Boahen for her contributions to the building of democratic
Ghana.
