Dr. Kwabena Donkor |
Asks
Ekow Mensah.
The
power outage which has lasted for more than three years may not end soon.
Indeed
over the last two weeks, the situation in Accra appears to have worsened with some
communities sometimes being without power for more than 24hours.
Even
though the Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor has promised that ‘Dumsor” will
be a thing of the past by the end of December, the future looks bleak.
Already
a number of media houses have started a countdown to the end of Dumsor following
a pledge by the Minister of Power that he will resign if he is unable to keep
his promise.
Very
reliable sources in the power sector say that the only way the power outage can
end in December is for Government to find a minimum of US$100 million for the
purchase of fuel for the thermal generation plants.
If
the rationing of power is to be ended up to March next year, the Government
will need a minimum of US $300 million.
Already, the Volta River Authority (VRA) owes
close to US$ 1billion on the purchase of fuel.
“The
problem with Dumsor is not about the generation capacity but simply the fact
that we cannot find the money to buy fuel” said our sources.

End Blockade Now
The
easing of relations between the United States of America and the Island state
of Cuba has been cheered by well meaning people all over the world.
There
has been exchange of Ambassadors accompanied by very nice speeches but nothing
substantial has happened with regards to the lifting of the embargo on Cuba.
The Cuban people have suffered considerable
hardship as a result of the unjust imposition of the embargo.
It
has denied them access to crucial medicines and some technology needed for
industrial and scientific development.
The
Cuban economy has also lost billions of dollars as a result of the criminal
imposition of the embargo.
The
Insight calls on the Obama administration to initiate immediate action to lift
the embargo against Cuba.
It
is imperative for a fair resolution of the problems between the two countries.
