Trade Minister, Ekwow Spio Garbrah |
There
can be no doubt that Ekow Spio Gabrah, now minister of Trade has nursed the
ambition to become the President of the Republic of Ghana.
Indeed
at one stage he thought and said that he would be a better President than
Professor John Evans Atta Mills.
When
he lost the contest and Professor Mills did not find him worthy of a
ministerial post, he launched tirades against young appointees of the
Government describing them as “Team B”.
Now
Ekow Spio Gabrah says that he has given up that ambition at least for the
present and is fully committed to the campaign to re-elect President John
Dramani Mahama.
According
to him it would be crazy for anybody to challenge President John Mahama at the
party primary because of his achievements.
The
truth however is that Ekow Spio Gabrah knows that he cannot challenge President
Mahama and win.
The
likely outcome of such a challenge would be a humiliating defeat for the man
who continues to nurture groups around the country calling themselves Friends
of Spio Gabrah.
If
Mr Ekow Spio Gabrah is content with his position as Minister of Trade why has
he formed or encouraged the formation of “Friends of Spio Gabrah”
Of
what use are the Friends of Spio Gabrah to a minister who is truly loyal to the
President and has no ambition of moving up?
Does
he need that as a Minister?
It
is refreshing that Spio has finally advised himself that any foray into the
Presidential race will be nothing more than an adventure.
EDITORIAL
FROM
INSIDE THE NPP
The
messages that are coming out of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) clearly indicate
that the party is not ready for power in 2016.
For,
how can elements in a political party which is serious about capturing power in
the next election claim that their leaders have been bought by the ruling
party?
If
indeed, the leaders of the NPP are so corrupt that they can be bought with
petty gifts of Toyota Land Cruizers, then why should anybody vote for them?
The
other day another group in the party which appeared determined to smear their
own national organizer put out the false claim that he had stolen campaign
funds to buy himself a car.
It is from the centre of the same party that
the false allegation that the national party chairman is a drug dealer is made.
There have been even more serious allegations
leveled against former President J.A Kufuor, Mr Kwadwo Mpianin, Nana Akufo-
Addo and many others in the party by its own members and loyalists.
What is worse is that it appears that some
party leaders and activists have now mastered the art of secretly recording
sensitive party meetings and discussions for public consumption.
It
may even appear that they have turned this bizarre past time into a full time
business.
The NPP has to realize that with this strange
conduct of some of its leaders and activists power will surely elude it in
2016.
If
the NPP wants to win the elections then these mercenaries in its ranks ought to
change or be changed.
