Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah |

On
Wednesday 27th April, many progressives trooped to the Kwame Nkrumah
Memorial Park to begin activities to mark the 44th anniversary of the death of
Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Founder of the Modern State of Ghana.
Nkrumah
died in Romania on April 27, 1972 from a cause which is still not clear.
It is widely speculated that he died from
cancer but others have suggested that he died from the after effects of the
terrorist attacks on him.
Those
who gathered at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park included leaders of the
Convention Peoples Party (CPP), family member’s representatives of Government
and members of the Socialist Forum of Ghana (SFG).
Wreaths
were laid on behalf of the Government of Ghana, the Nkrumah family, the
Convention Peoples Party, the Socialist Forum of Ghana and the People of Ghana.
Organisers say that leaders of other political
parties have also been invited to the event at which special tributes will be
paid to the Osagyefo.
At
5:00pm the Socialist Forum of Ghana (SFG) also launch a book on Nkrumah at the
International Press Centre in Accra.
The
book entitled “Secret Documents on Nkrumah from the British Foreign Office” is
a compilation of the declassified document of the British Foreign Office and
commentaries.
A
number of dignitaries including Ministers, Parliamentarians and diplomats have
been invited to the event.
Editorial
URGENT ATTENTION NEEDED FOR THIS!
A
call to make Buruli Ulcer treatment free should be given urgent attention.
The
buruli ulcer problem became very topical some years back, but receded in the
news under the assumption that the menace has been somehow dealt with.
But
in the last few months, regular reports of buruli ulcer incidents have emerged,
suggesting that the menace is either enjoying a comeback or a relaxation in the
state of vigilance on the disease.
Speaking
at Amasaman in Accra West recently, Dr Jarvis Abilla, the Medical
Superintendent of Ga West Municipal Hospital, said some buruli ulcer patients
had been abandoned by their families and had been in the hospital for more than
three years, indicating that the future plans of such patients were in
jeopardy.
He
explained that the donor pool fund, which received resources from organisations
had also collapsed, giving some challenges to the facility.
Dr
Abilla made the recommendation at a ceremony at which Frimps Oil Co. Ltd
donated to the Buruli Ulcer Ward of the Ga West Municipal Hospital, at
Amasaman, the capital of Ga West Municipality.
The
doctor’s statements should be alarming to anyone with cursory knowledge of the
disease. It is a terrible disease and although it can be treated well in its
early stages, failure to do so causes such horrible disfigurement that we
should not allow the situation to get out of hand.
