The
greatest Super Featherweight Champion in boxing history, Barima Azumah Nelson,
has called for policies that will put Ghanaian indigenous companies at the
pinnacle of the national economy.
He
said he believed in everything made in Ghana because it does not only create
jobs for our young men and women, but also reveals the ingenuity of the
Ghanaian and tells the story of our great exploits and what more Ghana can
achieve when indigenous companies are given the needed support.
He
was speaking at a colourful ceremony in Accra to present him as the brand
ambassador of the Ghana Oil Marketing Company (GOIL).
He
said “ I believe in the patronage of made in Ghana goods because it creates
economic activity and helps raise the needed revenue for national development
and that is why I have accepted the honour made me by being made a brand
ambassador of a state owned company like Goil, a shining example of Ghanaian
efficiency.”
Nii
Laryea Affotey Afgbo, Greater Accra Regional Minister, extolled the virtues of
respectfulness and humility of Azumah Nelson adding that Goil, as a state owned
enterprise is happy to be associated with the image and the personality of one
whose exploits embodies what is good about Ghana.
According
to him, a decision taken by the government last year to deregulate the oil
retail sector and to allow oil marketing companies to determine the ex pump
prices of fuel with minimum supervision from the National Petroleum
Authority had led to the transformation
of Goil and has justified the usefulness of that decision.
On
the other hand, Patrick A.K Akorli, Managing Director of Goil, held that the
deregulation of the oil industry brought so many challenges to the company but
it managed to take the lead in the oil retail market with over a 30 percent
share.
The
achievement of Goil he said can be attributed to the sound management practices
of consistency, hard work b and the can do spirit of the Ghanaian.
Goil
he said is proud to associate itself with Azumah Nelson, whose exploits
embodies what is good about Ghana adding that Goil will always defend the
country’s interest.
